Bradleys Typeface
Upside Down
During a workshop with Yoann Minet, I created an identity font, using Christian Schwartz's character creation methodology, (drawing characters from memory). I tried to reproduce, from memory, character sketches by Eric Gill. Font sketches he designed himself for Douglas Cleverdon's library. The result is letters with preserved proportions, close to the original model, similar serifs and incisions, a straight axis of contrasting symmetry, as well as the inversion of the counterforms, due to my dyslexia and my particular visual memory. All these similarities and differences purely produced by my own practice give a distinctive and easily identifiable personality.
The Bradleys font was born. With classic incision intentions, Greco-Roman inspired characters, characterized by small triangular serifs, which place it between the Garaldes family and the Linéales family. Its games of inversions and counter-forms create an instant identity at first glance.
